Chapman began building a kinship with the animals. The group of monkeys slept high atop the canopy of a gigantic tree. She slept at the base of the tree — reassured that she would be looked after by her new community. Chapman even developed a high-pitched scream — which would be a makeshift mechanism of communication between herself and the monkeys. While she couldn’t fully understand the “language” being spoken, it was a comforting feeling nonetheless.
