9. Edinburgh, Scotland
Edinburgh’s gothic architecture perfectly encapsulates a raw energy within this city. Chock-full of art and culture, it’s easily one of the most underappreciated places within Europe. The pub scene is absolutely terrific, and one can get an outstanding look at the city by hiking famed Arthur’s Seat (as well as a myriad of hiking trails on the fringes of the city). There’s a definite grittiness in Edinburgh. With that said, it’s a soak-it-up-and-enjoy sort of grittiness.
