Though the initial shock of being harassed by monkeys was jarring, Chapman suddenly developed a sensation of tranquility. She recognized the communal feel in which the monkeys operated under. One monkey had grabbed a small bushel of bananas. In desperate need of food, Chapman snagged a banana which had fallen onto the ground. She watched the monkeys — imitating their movements and methods for extracting the fruit out of the peel.
